Message from the
Spackenkill Union Free School District

August 11, 2020

Dear Spackenkill Community,

Today, our Return to School Committee met to discuss our reopening plans, including a set of additional hybrid plans. Afterwards, our administrators recorded a video explaining rationale and options regarding these plans. The discussion focused on schedules, special education, and childcare. We expect to post the video tomorrow (Wednesday, August 12), along with the additional hybrid student schedules, at spackenkillschools.org/COVID-19.

Please view the video, as it should answer quite a few community questions. We will post another informational video covering medical and safety questions on Monday, August 17, followed by a third focused on athletics on Tuesday, August 18.

We will also hold three community question-and-answer (Q & A) sessions that will be formatted much like a remote Board of Education meeting. Administrators will answer your live questions, submitted through a form that will be posted on the front page of our district website, spackenkillschools.org.  The dates are as follows:

Thursday, August 13, at 5 pm
Tuesday, August 18, at 5 pm
Wednesday, August 19, at 5 pm

Although we can answer a question on any topic at each session, we will focus on certain themes on each night in order to streamline the process and allow for additional “experts” to be present on certain dates. On the 13th, we will discuss our hybrid and remote plans as well as special education, childcare, and transportation. On the 18th, the focus will be on medical and safety concerns and we plan on having our district nurse and district medical director from Emergency One present. Our final session (August 19) will start with the topic of athletics but will have time for any questions that remain unanswered. Each session will last approximately one hour and if more time is needed we can add another session or address questions directly.

Parents/guardians, please also look for a message from your principal surveying you on your return-to-school plans, including whether your child will attend on a hybrid or full-remote schedule, need transportation and/or meals, and is in need of childcare. All of this feedback will be used to determine which plan(s) will be recommended to and approved by our Board of Education at our August 25th meeting.

The results of the Parent/Guardian Survey and Secondary Student Survey are now posted on our website. You can read the results at spackenkillschools.org/COVID-19, or by clicking directly here. We really appreciate your feedback and patience as we develop plans tailored to our community.

We hope that you will be able to watch the videos once they are posted to our website and join us for our community Q & As. Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Paul M. Fanuele, Ed.D., on Behalf of the Return to School Committee
