Update on COVID-19, March 12, 2020

A Message from the
Spackenkill Superintendent

March 12, 2020

Dear Spackenkill Community,

Mark VillantiToday all county superintendents, County Executive Marc Molinaro, and Health Commissioner Dr. Anil Vaidian held a conference call to discuss the county’s response to the coronavirus. We learned the following information:

  •  The first case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Dutchess County. We do not know where the person lives, but have been assured that this person has no connection with any local school district.
  •  Dutchess County Government is recommending “the suspension of large community and social gatherings and events as a precautionary measure through the end of April."

What does this mean for Spackenkill?

  • Starting today, county superintendents are limiting large gatherings that involve groups other than our students in school.
  • This will mean that athletic teams can practice, but that all competitive games are suspended until the end of April.
  • All student activities that involve outside groups are postponed, such as our spring musical.

Today I met again with some students and staff. I am impressed by everyone’s support, understanding, and relative calm. We will continue to collaborate with health and government officials. Events are changing quickly, and as I receive new information I will inform you.

On one last note: The staff member's spouse who was tested is negative for coronavirus. We can all breathe a sigh of relief.

Sincerely,

Mark Villanti
