On Monday, September 5, 2016 at approximately 6:10pm the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to the area of South Road (Route 9) and Beechwood Avenue for the report of two teens approached by the passenger of a white van. It was reported that the passenger of the van, a man with a tan complexion, possibly Hispanic, approached the teens with unknown intentions. The teens did not engage the subject in any further conversation and were able to leave the area without further incident. The van proceeded to travel in an unknown direction. The teens were unable to provide a more detailed description of the occupants of the van or a better description of the van. An investigation by members of the Town of Poughkeepsie Patrol and Detective Division is ongoing. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Town of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-485-3666.

You may be aware that there was a fire in one of the HS dumpsters a week ago. After a thorough investigation by the Town Of Poughkeepsie Police Department, it was determined that the fire was caused by accident, not as a malicious act of vandalism.

Effective Monday, February 22, the management of the district’s bus contract with Allways East will be assumed by another bus company, Total Transportation and its subsidiary, L & M. The drivers will remain the same. The only change will be that some of the buses will be Allways East buses and some will be from the new company.

Our School Resource Officer has informed us that, following a police investigation, it was determined that last week's incident in which two high school students were approached at their bus stop was a case of mistaken identity. No criminal charges have been filed. All adults and bus drivers are encouraged to call law enforcement at “911” in the event that they witness any activity that might put students or the public at risk.

We have received information from our School Resource Officer that two female high school students were approached at their bus stop this morning in the Nassau area. The police have been notified and a report has been filed. The subject is described as a young white male with dark hair. He is reported to be driving a gold Suzuki.
Please speak with your children in a reassuring manner to plan their response to any adult stranger that may approach them as well as the safety measures that children should take in the event that they feel threatened or uncomfortable. All adults and bus drivers are encouraged to call law enforcement at “911” in the event that this individual and/or either vehicle is spotted in any area that may put students or the public at risk.

The Superintendent and Board of Education spoke briefly about security measures at the Board meeting on January 14th. Dr. Powell stated that the administrators are meeting with law enforcement again on January 17th, at which time they will firm up building procedures that do not require any additional costs. In the meantime, additional security measures that do involve additional costs are being investigated and will be presented to the Board for consideration in February.

District administrators and law enforcement officials hosted a safety meeting in the Todd Middle School cafeteria at 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 3rd. School counseling personnel were also in attendance. The purpose of this meeting was to listen to the community’s concerns and answer questions regarding our non-confidential safety procedures.
