A partial exemption from school taxes for veterans was approved by the Spackenkill Board of Education. Military veterans may receive an exemption based upon their type and time of service. The default exemptions were approved for Spackenkill veterans. The basic exemption provides up to a 15 percent deduction of the assessed value of any qualifying residential real property, up to $12,000 maximum, that is owned by and used as the primary residence of a veteran, spouse of a veteran, or the surviving spouse of a veteran who has not remarried. The second exemption approved is for any veteran who served in a combat zone. This additional exemption provides up to a 10 percent deduction of the assessed value or up to $8,000 maximum. The final exemption is for veterans who received a compensation rating because of a service-related disability. The exemption is 50 percent of the veteran’s disability rating multiplied by the assessed value of the property, a total not to exceed $40,000. The exemptions are approved on a district-wide basis. Check with your tax collector to request the application for the veterans' exemption.
If a veteran has already filed for and is receiving the exemption for town and county, he/she does not have to do anything. If a veteran has never filed before, he/she must visit the town assessor's office to apply:
